Why regrouting prices vary
Two bathrooms can look similar and be very different jobs. The main variables are:
- The size of the tiled area. A shower enclosure and a fully tiled bathroom floor and walls are not comparable in labour terms.
- Whether it's walls, floors or both. Access, working position and joint layout all differ.
- The condition of the existing grout. Grout that's simply discoloured behaves differently to grout that has failed and is coming away.
- How much grout removal is required. Removing failed grout is the slow part of the job, and how much of it there is drives the time more than anything else.
- How much preparation the joints need before new grout goes in.
- Whether waterproof sanitary silicone needs renewing around edges and corners as part of the work.
This is why a small localised repair and a whole-bathroom regrout shouldn't be compared on headline price. They're different amounts of work with different outcomes.

Indicative guide prices, not a quote. At booking you only authorise the callout fee - the technician inspects the job and you approve the price in writing before any work begins. Materials are quoted separately where they apply.
Get a regrouting quoteA quotation means the scope is confirmed and priced before the work goes ahead, rather than a number being adjusted once someone is already in your bathroom. Our fixed-price services are shown as fixed prices; where a job genuinely depends on what's there, we say so instead of publishing a figure that would need changing.
You can compare our tiling and regrouting options to see how regrouting sits alongside tile repair and new tiling.
What are you actually paying for?
Not the grout. Materially, grout is a minor cost. What you're paying for is the sequence of work that makes new grout last:
- Removing failed grout where that's required, without damaging the tiles either side of the joint.
- Cleaning and preparing the joints so the new grout has something sound to bond to.
- Applying fresh grout consistently across the area.
- Renewing waterproof sanitary silicone where it's needed - typically corners, edges and junctions.
- Finishing and cleaning up so the result looks like a finished bathroom rather than a repair.
Most of that is time and care. It's also why the condition of the existing grout has such a large effect on the price.
Can I just grout over the old grout?
Sometimes, partly - and it's a fair question rather than a silly one. If existing grout is sound and simply looks tired, a light refresh can improve the appearance without a full strip-out, and there are situations where that's a reasonable thing to do.
Where it doesn't work is when the old grout has failed. New grout needs depth in the joint and a sound surface to bond to. Spread thinly over crumbling or hollow grout, it tends to come away, and you've paid for a finish that doesn't last. That's why our regrouting approach includes removing failed grout where required rather than covering it - the preparation is what determines whether the result holds.
Which situation your bathroom is in is a judgement about the actual condition of the joints, not something to decide from a photo on the internet.
When regrouting isn't the answer
New grout fixes grout problems. It doesn't fix everything that makes a tiled area look or feel wrong. Regrouting may not be the right job if:
- tiles are cracked, chipped or damaged - those need repair or replacement, not new joints
- tiles are loose or sound hollow when tapped, which suggests the problem is behind the tile
- tiles are lifting or uneven
- there are signs of water coming through a tiled wall or floor, or persistent damp
In those cases grout is the symptom, not the cause, and regrouting over it would be cosmetic. Where what we find is outside what tiling and regrouting can properly resolve - for example an underlying moisture or waterproofing problem - we'll tell you that plainly rather than take on work that won't hold. Our regrout or replace guide walks through that decision in more detail.
